Historical Value

Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka's ancient capitals. It served as the second capital of the country after Anuradhapura and flourished between the 10th and 12th centuries under the Chola and Sinhalese kingdoms. The city is renowned for its well-preserved ruins, showcasing the grandeur of ancient Sri Lankan architecture and engineering. The city reached its golden age during the reign of King Parakramabahu I, who created a magnificent garden-city with sophisticated irrigation systems, including the vast Parakrama Samudra reservoir that still supplies water to the region today.

The archaeological treasures of Polonnaruwa include an impressive collection of ancient structures, from towering stupas and intricate Buddha statues to royal palaces and unique architectural features like the Vatadage.
